A PC’s reputation has as much influence on initial reactions towards them as does their charisma.

This reputation system for the Stormkeep campaign is a direct adaptation of the reputation as used in the Baldur’s Gate series of pc games.

Unlike in BG, however, pc’s will not be able to raise reputation just be making a ‘standard donation’ to a good temple.  Although generous donations very well may impact reputation, no table or chart is available to let the pc’s know just how much would make a difference.

Reputation is increased for performing good and noble deeds, and is reduced for performing diabolical or evil deeds.  Additionally, reputation might decline for NOT performing a noble or good deed if word gets around that the pc was present and had the opportunity and chose to instead just walk away. (Example: The pc’s witness an orc massacre on a small farming village.  The orcs do not see the party, hidden at the edge of the woods,  and the party determines they cannot help and goes about their way, leaving the orcs to finish their foul deeds, not even returning to render aid later.  Unbeknownst to the pc’s, a local ranger saw them and recognized them.  He felt that they had sufficient numbers to do something to stop the slaughter, and spreads the word of their cowardice.).

Reputation is relevant to the area around which the pc’s have frequented.  PC’s who venture farther away will find their reputation reduced closer to their ‘baseline’ (starting reputation) as they travel farther and farther away from frequented areas.  Of course, those with phenomenal reputations will still have been heard of and treated accordingly, though perhaps not with the ‘hero worship’ they were used to back home.

NPC reactions will be dependent upon the pc’s actually making themselves known and/or on being actually recognized.  Positive reaction adjustments are likely to result in, not only friendly reception, but greater cooperation and possibly reduced prices.  Additionally, evil npc’s will most likely react inversely to the guidelines presented in the tables below.

Civilized towns no longer will deal with the pc.   NPC’s, other than the most foul and evil will not deal with the pc’s.  Local authorities, law enforcement and good adventurers hunt the pc down tirelessly.
